Lache pas la patate: French in Louisiana

Middle-aged Cajuns often tell a story about being punished as children for speaking French at school. One punishment, aside from whipping, was to have students write 1000 times, "I will not speak French on the school grounds." It was an officially sanctioned devaluation of French Louisiana's language and culture which in turn encouraged this generation not to teach French to its own children. However, there is also evidence of resistance.
