Colombia Program Introduction

This video features Olivia Cadaval, the curator of the 2011 Folklife Festival program Colombia: The Nature of Culture. She has curated numerous Festival programs, including the 2010 Mexico program, she has worked extensively on documentation, public programs, and education projects in the Latino community of Washington, D.C. She published a book Creating a Latino Identity in the Nation’s Capital: The Latino Festival and has written for a number of publications including Urban Odyssey, Creative Ethnicity, Washington at Home, New York Folklore, the Journal of Folklore Research, and The Public Historian. Dr. Cadaval holds a Ph.D. in American Studies and Folklife from George Washington University.

Por ejemplo, en la presentación de la comisaria Olivia Cadaval me pareció encontrar una confusión entre una de las manifestaciones culturales propias del Caribe colombiano, como es el lumbalú, con otra de la costa Pacífica, que son los “alabaos”, pero no sé si se debe a mi escasa comprensión del inglés o a un error de contenido.
6 Diego Martínez Celis { 06.20.11 at 9:09 pm }: Muy interesante recorrido por lugares, manifestaciones y gentes de la cultura colombiana, la mayoria desconocidas (incluso en el contexto nacional) por las pocas investigaciones y divulgacion que se han hecho de ellas y que han sido invisibilizadas por otras que ya son todo un cliché. Sea esta una buena oportunidad para dar a conocer estos otros aspectos de la idiosincracia colombiana, cuyo patrimonio mas valioso y representativo es sin duda la calidad de su gente. !Exitos en Washington!

This will eventually include an in-depth article about the Colombia program, which will be available in English and Spanish. On the actual Festival grounds, the Colombia program text panels are in English and Spanish as well.
12 Miguel Torres Barrios { 06.22.11 at 12:42 am }: Well let us remind ourselves that this festival takes place in the United States, so it is supposed to be in English, I don’t see any reason why the website should have a translation to Spanish, as most Colombians interested in the Colombian topics covered by the “Colombia: The Nature of Culture” program will have greater access to resources in Colombia, in Spanish.

On another note, thank you for the organizer of the festival and Dr Cadaval for her amazing work on thoroughly explaining the program and taking such an interest in its completion and presentation, I for one can’t wait to see the Festival and the program in the Mall, it is truly a magnificent way for many of us Colombians who find ourselves outside our native land, to have the chance to know and experience some of the other different and rich forms of cultural expressions that our beautiful country has to offer, oftentimes we forget how diverse our culture is, as opposed to this monolithic notion that is sometimes perpetuated by the Colombian diaspora abroad. The Smithsonian has truly allowed me to know my own country more fully than many of my fellow Colombians back home.

People often do not understand why we not only live in Colombia but love Colombia and its people. I hope the festival will break some of the stereotypes and show many of the positive views of this “emerald”. May God bless you.
