Festival Audio – Garifuna Collective featuring Umalali
One of this Festival’s musical highlights is the Central American ensemble Garifuna Collective featuring Umalali. They are performing as part of the Peace Corps program. They are introduced here by former Peace Corps Volunteer Tim O’Malley who met the musicians during his time in Belize and has continued to work with them ever since.
For more information about the group click here and also please support the music by buying their CD found here.
This live recording was made on Friday, July 1st at 12PM, on the World Stage at the 2011 Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. The running time is 51 minutes. Enjoy!

There are two albums in the Smithsonian Folkways archival catalogue which are profound Garinagu/Garifuna cultural identifiers, comprised of sacred and secular music alike, hear, see, listen and read about Dabuyabarugu: Inside the Temple – Sacred Music of the Garifuna of Belize (http://www.folkways.si.edu/albumdetails.aspx?itemid=450) and Traditional Music of the Garifuna of Belize (http://www.folkways.si.edu/albumdetails.aspx?itemid=650)
