May 15, 2012 marks the exact 150th anniversary of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), one of the partners of the Campus and Community:  Public and Land-grant Universities at 150 program of the 2012 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. On this day in 1862, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed the legislation that established the USDA.

Hello, As a Smithsonian employee, I graduated from a land grant university. I am wondering how many other Smithsonian employees attened one of these universities also. M.K Emory

Great question! Many of us in the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage are also graduates of land-grant schools.

I enjoyed the opportunity to come down from the Hill today to speak to the fine gathering of locals, visitors, and members of the United States Agricultural Society, about the legislation, recently signed by President Lincoln, to establish the United States Department of Agriculture, and the pending legislation to establish the Land Grant Colleges. The bill has passed both the Senate and the House and I am expecting the President to sign it within the next few days.

I am on the program to speak to additional interested individuals, tomorrow at 11:30AM at the Smithsonian University tent. Please come by and listen and share in the experience of the USDA 150th.

    Your obediant servant,

Rep. Justin Smith Morrill (VT) (R)
