Gingerbread Making

A staple of county fairs for centuries, gingerbread (mézeskalács) has long been a sweet canvas for expressing Hungarian cultural heritage. The countless shapes and decorative motifs are inspired by both secular and religious life. The dough of flour and boiled honey (which actually contains no ginger) is baked into hand-carved wooden molds and decorated with piped-on icing of egg whites and powdered sugar.
