Water Ways: Mid-Atlantic Maritime Communities

Weather and the Water

Hear firsthand accounts of storms at sea and find out how fishermen stay safe during squalls

Coastal weather is unpredictable, and every boat captain and crew member has some story of being caught in a storm and outsmarting "Mother Nature," as well as their own methods of predicting the weather beyond listening to NOAA weather radio broadcasts.

Maritime communities are also deeply affected by seasonal storms such as hurricanes which can rip off roofs, flood towns and destroy businesses. Most coastal residents have weather stories that can range from heart warming to heartbreaking.

Listen to the weather stories of Festival participants, including some experts in coastal weather prediction from NOAA's National Weather Service.
